In my research I came across Czech photographer Frantisek Drtikol. I found his Soul Series particularly interesting, and plan to do my own experiments with cardboard cutouts as silhouettes. Also I am interested in the geometry of the art deco aesthetic in his portraiture. His use of strong contrasting shadows and light created drama. Drtikol called his work ‘photopurism, a sort of abstract photography’. He had an interest in Theosophy and Buddhism, and the Soul series appears to draw from his beliefs.
